The room has been booked, invitations circulated, you’ve pulled together the agenda, written your report, asked others to write their reports – job done! The day arrives, you sit at the top of the table, as the Chair, everyone turns up and sits round the table. You talk, they ask a few questions, you answer them, they talk. After 2 hours maybe a couple of decisions have been made, a few actions have been taken and everyone leaves uninspired.
It doesn’t have to be this way. You can hold more engaging sessions, where better decisions can be made, the participants are enthused, and you get the best out of everyone.
Too good to be true? Well it’s not.
After becoming an Art of Hosting Practitioner, together with my coaching skills, I refuse to lead dull and unengaging meetings. My new approach encourages powerful dialogue outside a typical coaching session. Meetings will never be the same again! Understanding the purpose of the session, being able to ask powerful questions, drawing out creativity, providing a space for honesty and deep thought, and everyone sitting and listening …. just a few skills and techniques can create a supportive and productive environment!
It may seem uncomfortable at first. It involves a different way of working, maybe sitting round a circle or in groups, asking just one question to try and get past the initial automatic response to be able to delve into deeper thought. Transcribing ideas through diagrams or drawings.
At work we mostly use the left side of our brain, but when we use both sides that’s when the magic happens.
Challenge yourself and try something new, it may inspire others to do the same and maybe take your business or service into a whole new and important direction.
